This piece is about the most recent and updated Nascar schedule of 2020. The organization had to modify the original timeline in light of the COVID 19 outbreak in the United States of America.

NASCAR Cup Series 2020 happens to be the 72nd season for professional NASCAR car racing in the United States of America. The season kicked off before the COVID 19 outbreak at the Daytona International Speedway with the Bluegreen Vacations Duel, Busch Clash qualifying races, and the Daytona 500’s 62nd running (a historic achievement!). The regular season culminates with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 on 29th August at Daytona as per the most recent and updated schedule. As for the NASCAR playoffs, the final race that will mark the end of the season will take place on 8th November at Phoenix Raceway.

Entering into this year’s racing season, everyone was aware that the NASCAR 2020 schedule would feature significant modifications in terms of racing tracks that would host races on which particular dates. However, no one could have anticipated the degree of change that the NASCAR 2020 schedule has gone through!

After shuffling some of the race dates and shifting particular races to various tracks, NASCAR has still managed to hold on to a full intact slate of 36 races for this year. As it happened, 4 of the Cup races concluded before the coronavirus outbreak reaching the United States of America.

NASCAR became the very 1stAmerican sports league to recommence its racing season (although without any fans attending, which is quite unfortunate!). They got the ball rolling with a formerly unscheduled race on 17th May (Sunday) at the Darlington Raceway.

NASCAR made a persistent attempt to accommodate a 36-race schedule into a short time frame. NASCAR  has scheduled all of the Cup races (regular-season) that will gradually play out through August.

The NASCAR revised schedule began with races in nearproximity to the Charlotte, N.C. area. That is where most of the race teams are situated. Running races close to this area eliminated a large part of logistics (travel-related) concerns linked with organizingseveral competitions all in a single week. The back-to-backs at Dover and Michigan will include 4 of the previoussix regular-season races.

Below is what we know about the current state of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

On 17th May (Sunday), the Darlington race ran instead of the race in the Chicagoland location, which was scheduled originally for 21st June. The Darlington race on 20th May ran instead of the Richmond race (postponed) that NASCAR had scheduled originally for19th April. Furthermore, the 27th May Charlotte race ran instead of the Sonoma race scheduled originally for 14th June.

The Pocono back-to-back races stayed on schedule scheduled for June’s last weekend, with racers racing on successive days. Fox, along with FS1, presented these races instead of NBC. Fox will be closing its full coverage for this season with the All-Star Race scheduled on 15th July at Bristol before NBC takes the reins. However, NBC still covered the Brickyard 400 that took place on 5th July.

The races previously postponed atMichigan and Dover are now part of Saturday-Sunday back to backs in August at those respective race tracks.

Since the city of New York requires all individuals to quarantine for two weeks (14 days)  posttraveling from any of the COVID 19 impacted states (including North Carolina) in the United States of America, the Watkins Glen race initially scheduled on 16th August shifted to the Daytona road track. The Athletic reported that NASCAR tried very hard to secure a quarantine waiver for its races in Watkins Glen races. However, Governor Andre Cuomo's office denied their request.

The race scheduled next month on 16th August 2020 will be the first NASCAR Cup Series race on the Daytona road course.

Additional Changes to the 2020 NASCAR Schedule

The following are some of the other changes which the NASCAR Cup Series schedule went through owing the coronavirus pandemic

  • The Bass Pro Shops Night Race scheduled initially for mid-August at Bristol Motor Speedway will now take place in mid-September 202 – it will take Charlotte’s place and become the Round of 16’s final race.
  • NASCAR will conduct the Playoffs Championship Round on 8th November at the Phoenix Raceway. This will be the very 1st Phoenix race to wrap up the racing season. Owing to this and the arrival of the Pocono back-to-backs, the 2020 NASCAR racing season will finish up one week before the previous seasons. The management has usually held the racing season finale on the 3rdweekend of November, falling in the timeframe between 16th and 22nd November.
  • After more than two decades (21 years to be exact) of being held close to Independence Day weekend, the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at the Daytona International Speedway track shifted to August to becomeNASCAR “regular” season’s final race. To take its slot, the Brickyard 400 hosted at Indianapolis Motor Speedway moved to the Independence Day weekend.
  • On the 8th July, NASCAR made the formal announcement saying thatthe New York State is not inclined to give a waiver for the Watkins Glen International track. Furthermore, because of the 2-week quarantine from specific states, including North Carolina, where all the teams are staying, NASCAR will remove the Watkins track from their official schedule. The Daytona Grand will take its place.
  • Also,Nascar has reduced the Michigan International Speedway, and Dover International Speedway races from 400 miles to 500 km. Since Daytona has hosted the Paul Revere 250 car race on 4th July with fans in attendance, expect to see a limited number of spectators will be allowed to attend.

NASCAR 2020 Schedule for Playoffs

According to reports, NASCAR hopes to keep its schedule for the playoffs undisturbed with its original tracks and dates. The only modification that they are currently considering is a switch of the dates for the Texas and Las Vegas races (these are similar kinds of tracks) to account for another racing occasion at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The following is the Cup Series 2020 playoff schedule (the original one) that  NASCAR is keen on preserving without changing any dates.
